Mommy, Teddy Bear and Me™
A Peek Inside
-
Separation anxiety, the fear of a child being separated from their parent or guardian, occurs primarily in young children up until around 3 years old. Separation anxiety may be amplified during times of stress, including trying new activities, going to school, or being left in the care of someone new. That’s why Dance Exploration introduced their Mommy, Teddy Bear and Me class for children ages 18months-3. The goal of this class is to introduce young children to a new activity with the help of their parent or caregiver to relieve the anxiety associated with trying a new activity.

As the title of the class suggests, we also include Teddy Bears throughout class activities. Teddy Bears have been proven to relieve stress in children and adults! You can learn more about the Social Impact of Teddy Bears in our blog post on the subject.
We incorporate them specifically into our Mommy, Teddy Bear and Me classes because of the calming effect Teddy Bears have on relieving stress and anxiety. Numerous studies and research show that stroking a teddy bear’s fur can be very therapeutic. One psychologist, Corrine Sweet, says “it evokes a sense of peace, security and comfort. It’s human nature to crave these feelings from childhood to adult life” (Llorens, 2012). An additional study (Jarrett, 2011) shows that touching a teddy bear can lessen the adverse psychological effects of social exclusion and reduce stress – which is why teddy bears are often times given to trauma victims.
