    Class Description
  • The Broadway Exploration Program for Elementary Schools is a valuable addition to any public or private elementary school location. Broadway Exploration Elementary Classes follow the ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum. The ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum  revolves around 5 Methods of Performance Arts™  which are designed to teach the whole child at all stages of their development. Broadway Exploration Elementary Program classes build critical and creative thinking skills, enhance creative expression and introduce social-emotional skills such as patience, waiting turns and sharing.  The Broadway Exploration Program for Elementary Schools include an AcceptDANCE™ Policy which encourages healthy relationships among participants. The Broadway Exploration Elementary Program goals and outcomes align with state and national standards for Theatre and Drama Education as well as align with Common Core Standards for Grades 1-5.

    Classes are structured for success! The Broadway Exploration Class Flow is choreographed to follow the natural progressions of a child’s movement and learning abilities to ensure mastery of class objectives and movement studies. Broadway Exploration classes brighten a child’s school day by waking the brain and body up with lively, and educational dance based movement games and activities. Class is led by a passionate Performance Arts Educator Certified in the ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum who cares about nurturing the success of each student at every turn.

    The learning does not stop in the classroom. The ‘Dance to Learn!’® Family Engagement™ is included in all classes. It stresses the important role parents and caregivers play in the academic success of their children.

  • Elementary Program Objectives

    Objective 1: Gross Motor Development

    Students at the end of the session should be able to complete simple locomotor and non-locomotor movements including but not limited to: marches, gallops, skips, tip toe walks, twirls, spins, bounces, jumps, leaps and more. They should understand stage directions such as upstage, downstage, stage right, stage left and center stage and how certain movements can move them across our around stage. Students should also be able to grasp and manipulate stage props to improve fine motor skills.

    Objective 2: Improvisation

    School Aged children will improve their improvisation skills as they explore more advanced concepts and ideas through acting and play. While visual aids will still be used frequently, more abstract concepts such as feelings and emotions, places, and things can be explored. For example, they may be challenged to act out the solar system or the process of planting a garden.

    Objective 3: Acting

    School Aged children will be able to Create characters from scripts or through improvisation using voice, gestures and facial expressions as well as apply additional characteristics to their roles such as feelings and emotions. Students should also be able to examine character dynamics and how characters will relate to others within the work.

    Objective 4: Design

    Students will be challenged to design a scene through an inventive process, and perform the scene. Some scene work may also include props, costumes and set pieces and learning how to integrate those within the context of the play will be important.

    Objective 5: Directing

    School aged children will learn how to contribute ideas in improvisation and play building and help others with those applications. Students will also learn how to give, accept and integrate constructive and supportive feedback from self and others. Some Broadway Exploration classes also include roles such as Director or Assistant Director to help with the production of the work. Students will understand the different roles in involved in creating a dramatic play or musical and how those roles work together.

    Objective 6: Cognitive Development

    The Broadway Exploration classes teach many concepts of drama and theatre. By the end of the session students will be able to define stage direction and body positions. They will also be able to demonstrate understanding of historical and cultural context of scripts, scenes, and performances. Lastly, students in the Broadway Exploration program will be able to analyze dramatic text in scenes and scripts.

    Objective 7: Emotional Development

    Students in the Broadway Exploration Elementary School program will demonstrate safe use of voice and body to communicate characters. Students will be able to learn how to express themselves using improvisational tactics and techniques in fun warm up games and activities. Students will learn how to take and apply constructive feedback from their Performance Arts Educator and their peers.

    Objective 8: Social Development

    In rehearsal and performance, students will learn how to work as a productive and responsible member of an acting ensemble using scripted or improvisational scene work and following the direction of their Performance Arts Educator. They will learn team work, creative problem solving and conflict resolution as they participate collaboratively with partners and in groups.

    Objective 9: Association

    Students will learn how to read a scene description to create stage environments. They will also learn to read character lines to understand locale and mood.

    Objective 10: Create

    Students will be challenged to Create and write simple dramas and scenes to create simple scripts. Students may also experience different roles in the creative process as they learn how to direct, choreograph, compose, or perform.

    Objective 11: Perform

    All Students will perform their finished work for friends and family at a final performance on the last day of class!
